Session Description

International Student Advising

As higher education institutions (HEIs) continue to "internationalize" more and more, non-international staff at HEIs who get educated about international students and their issues are better prepared to understand and assist their international populations, both non-immigrant and immigrant. This workshop is designed to give academic advisors, registrars, faculty members, and admissions professionals a quick overview of some key U.S. immigration and visa regulations as applied international students, focusing mostly on F1 non-immigrant students. Specifically it will cover some key points about student visas, SEVIS/SEVP/I-20s, F1 status maintenance issues, OPT & CPT employment issues, F1 students in Intensive English Programs, and F1 student advising & legal liability issues. University professionals who attend this workshop will be better equipped to serve their international populations and thereby contribute to the well-being of their HEI."
