Session Description

Ethical Dilemmas in College Enrollment Management Practices:

The literature of Higher Education and Enrollment management is replete with competitive marketing strategies and the race for FTEs. Qualified students are rare commodities in limited supply and institutions position themselves more and more as denizens of humanitarian marketing. All Institutions sell an intangible product and their brand promise is measured in symbolic capital encased in the politics of ranking, service delivery, pricing, and communications. We are mostly non-profit but businesses nonetheless. What ethical considerations should guide our college admissions practices, are we counseling students or closing sales? Are we pushing the quest for knowledge and the habits of investigation? Is the bottom line driving our modus operandi? Are we pushing knowledge qua knowledge in the Gramsci’s sense of disinterested Knowledge and good sense? Are we flirting with a culture of distortions and miscommunications A.K.A. Bragging rights? These questions shall frame our exploration in this workshop
